If one person in the marriage has had an extra marital affair, it may be wise to get a professional to help you through this difficult time. This is especially if one or both of you still want your marriage to work out. You will need help to trust each other again and to move your relationship past the hurt caused. When you are thinking about separation or divorce, it may be worthwhile to see a counselor first. A counselor can help you put things in perspective and figure out whether the differences between you can be resolved or not. In most instances, if you are still committed to the relationship, you may be able to deal with the challenges that you are facing.

If extended family issues have spilled over to your marriage, it may be time to get an independent party to help you solve the problem. This can be a sensitive issue if one side of the family doesn't like or get along with one of the partners. This will help you to create boundaries in your relationship.

If you no longer respect your partner, this is not a good sign. You may feel resentful towards them or you may not care about their opinion on various matters. You may feel that you are better than them and more intelligent.

When you live separate lives, this may be an indication that something is wrong. This includes no longer being intimate and not knowing what is going on in each others lives. If you feel that you just co-exist as roommates, you may need the help of a professional to know what is wrong.
