How To Heal From Trauma Properly

By Gregory Foster

Being exposed to trauma, whether it is as a child or an adult is one of the worst things that can happen to a person. It doesn't matter the severity of this because it is something that belongs to the individual and they have to deal with it. People can compare this to another story, and neglect it, but there are always other things to have to deal with. This is why one has to learn how to heal from trauma.

When a person does not deal with their emotions and their feelings, they won't be able to live a lifestyle. They won't lead relationships which are healthy. It is not easy to have personal relationships when you have been through an abusive relationship of your own. You will find that you have difficulty with intimacy, which is obviously necessary when you are in a personal relationship.

You begin to heal from this as soon as you begin to talk about it. When you begin to express yourself, you will start to feel more about various emotions. The goals is to be able to feel versus this numb state of mind. This is how therapy can help you. It is obviously a long process, depending on the type of trauma and when it happened.

One also has to look for someone that they can relate to. This connection is very important because eventually the individual will want to open up. They will want to feel that they are in a safe space and that they have built up a good relationship with the therapist. This is said to be one of the most aspects of therapy.

As the individual progresses with this, they will develop other disorders. Often, they become disconnect from everyone else. Dissociative disorders are common. They feel as if they are in a world of their own. They may feel as if they are watching everyone and everything from the outside, such as in a movie.

It is not only abuse which one is affected by. In fact, originally, trauma therapy related to soldiers who came back from the battlefield and had to adjust to reality. In a case like this, there was a lot that interfered with their daily lives. It related to depression, anxiety, mood swings, anger and often aggression.

However, therapy can help all cases, whether it is long terms or whether someone has simply witnessed a robbery. There is a lot that goes through one's mind when an individual has seen a murder or an accident. Therapy is a slow process. But one has to be patient. People who have been through abusive situations, for example, will have trust issues.

There are other that go up and down with their emotions as well. It can be quite drastic with people who feel overwhelmed because of this roller coaster. This stage where they go up and down is very sudden, so it is obviously disruptive. These feelings also come in waves, where feelings are completely overwhelming. This can happen at any time. It doesn't last long because people often repress these feelings.
