For Foot Doctors Colorado Is Worth Visiting

By Charles Gray

Podiatrists are medical specialists specialized in providing surgical and medical care to persons with ankle, lower leg and foot issues. They offer services such as diagnosis, surgery and treatment of issues related to the lower limbs. For a person who is interested in caring to others, this is a very fascinating field to join. When in search of Foot doctors Colorado must be given priority.

There are many universities and colleges that offer academic training at various levels in the field of podiatry. Those who wish to join the field need to have a doctor of podiatric medicine, often abbreviated as DPM. The learning institution that one joins must be accredited and recognized in the country. The Council of Podiatric Medical Education had about 9 colleges accredited. A DPM program usually lasts four years before the student graduates.

One of the requirements before joining a DPM program is 3 years of undergraduate studies. During undergraduate studies, one should specify in laboratory sciences including biology, physics and chemistry. If one plans to enroll in a college in the United States having a good comprehension of the English language is important. Apart from undergraduate education, one will need to pass an MCAT test.

The courses that students cover in a podiatric college are similar to those covered in other medical degrees. Some of the courses covered include physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and anatomy. Last two years of schooling is spent on clinical rotations. These rotations are usually supervised closely by an already qualified doctor of podiatry. One must also spend another five years on surgical residency before they can be licensed.

All podiatrists in the United States need to have a licence. That is what the law demands. An individual must pay a given fee and excel in the licensing test. APMLE administers the exam. This is the body whose role is to govern the activities of podiatry in the nation. In some states, there are state-specific exams given to applicants before they can be licensed.

A license needs to be renewed after a certain period. One risks having their license revoked or cancelled if they fail to renew their license. Podiatrists need to stay updated of new inventions and developments in the field by continuing their medical education. One also has an option of being board certified. When is board certified, they are more qualified in this field and patients have more confidence in them.

In the year 2012, the United States had a total of 10,700 podiatrists. However, this number has been rising steadily. One can decide to work alone or with other podiatrists as a team, they can also work together with other professionals such as physicians. They mostly work at outpatient care centers, clinics, and hospitals.

Self-employment is also growing steadily in this field. Many podiatrists choose to work as self-employed workers after they become licensed. They may open offices alone or partner with other podiatrists and start a practice. Work is usually done on a full-time basis. Patients may be brought into the office or the podiatrist may be called out to attend to patients in the field.
