Journal Therapy Being Used To Help Treat Emotional And Physical Issues

By Della Monroe

Expressing the thoughts and feelings through the written word has been used as a part of therapy to treat various issues for a very long time. Such conditions include depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder and more. In fact, the treatment is not restricted to those of the emotional and psychological nature. It may be utilized for physical conditions as well. This part of the treatment may be known more as journal therapy. It can be done with the assistance of a professional, with a group or alone. Such an activity is often considered to be a way of clarifying one's thoughts, feelings and actions.

There are potentially many things that may happen in life that can cause negative disruptions. They may cause psychological distress, confusion, or otherwise. In some of these cases, a therapist might be needed. Such professionals may use a number of different therapies to assist in the healing process.

When seeing a professional therapist, there may be more than one method used to help the patient deal with circumstances. One technique that is often employed along with others is writing in a journal. This includes the patient expressing their feelings and thoughts through writing. It may include the events of the day, how they felt about them, or otherwise. There is no restriction on what a person can write. While this method may be used with the professional in one-to-one treatment, it can also be employed with group sessions and with something called self-therapy.

The reason why the written word is a way to deal with the issues is because it helps the writer deal clarify their thoughts. They have the chance to think about everything and deal with their emotions. The individual may be able to understand things better when they go through the details in this way.

The types of conditions and problems the technique may be used with are many. Depression and anxiety are two of the issues but there are others. Addictions, illnesses and relationship problems are other situations but there may be more.

There is no particular way of doing this. In most cases, it is just about describing what is going on in the person's head. It includes writing about one's inner thoughts and feelings. It is a way to express oneself without feeling judged. Doing this can bring about a greater understanding and a way to vent emotions.

Of course, this activity is not only for writing down the negative feelings. Patients are generally encouraged to write about their positive feelings as well. This can help to emphasize these emotions and increase them. In fact, writing about these things can help the healing process increase in speed.

Dealing with various issues like relationship problems, depression, anxiety, and physical illnesses can be helped by keeping a journal. This can be done by oneself, as a part of group therapy or as one of the methods of treatment by a psychologist. Individuals are encouraged to write about how they feel and what they are thinking. While negative thoughts are common during these times, eventually through the healing process, these things can be understood. At the times when positive feelings are experiences, these can be documented as well and in fact emphasized, to perhaps speed the healing.
