How The Tdcs Process Works And Its Many Merits To Patients

By Della Monroe

Transcranial direct stimulation refers to a treatment therapy offered by the passing of direct current through the head of a patient. It is a unique method of treatment which has been known to be helpful to patients with injuries like strokes. The treatment process is not complex and can even be carried out at the home of the patient by an expert therapist. TDCS involves the stimulation of brain neurons with some electric current which is passed from one point of the head, through the brain neurons, and to another point on the opposite of the first point.

The transcranial direct stimulation therapy has also been known to help with more conditions in patients such as helping improve the problem solving skills of an individual, reducing memory loss, raising the attention span of an individual, helping with language understanding and more. These different behavior changes can be achieved when the therapist uses current to stimulate different neurons of the brain.

The direct electric current used can be passed through the neurons in two different ways. One is by passing it from a positively charged electrode known as the anode while the other is by passing the current from the negatively charged electrode called a cathode. Each mode of current stimulation achieves a different effect. In most cases, one effect is the opposite of the other if the current is passed in the opposite direction.

Electric current is used to cause an excitement of neurons in the brain. This is done by either increasing their excitement or reducing it. When the current flows from the positively charged electrode towards the negatively charged electrode, the resulting effect is an increase in the excitement of neurons. If the current flows from the negatively charged electrode towards the positive electrode, the resulting effect is a reduction in the excitement of neurons. The different resulting effects lead to different behaviors shown by the patient.

The procedure requires you to have a power source that can deliver direct and constant current throughout the operation. Electrodes are also required for the process. Depending on the amount of effectiveness you want to achieve, the number of electrodes you need to have will vary. Modern forms of this therapy utilize more than two electrodes to achieve more effectiveness when placed on different parts of the head.

The process starts with cleaning and preparing the skin on the scalp where the electrodes will be placed. This ensures that there will be a strong connection created between the skin and the electrodes. The electrodes are then attached carefully and current passed through.

Turn the power device on to generate and pass direct current through the head of the patient. The current is allowed to pass on gradually. It can be increased or decreased gradually as the therapist desires.

As technology advances, modern transcranial simulation continues to grow. There are new methods of conducting the stimulation to ensure the patient receives maximum effects from the process. This includes using many smaller electrodes to increase the level of a desired effect.
