Causes And Treatment For Abdominal Pain

By Jason Gray

Pain in the abdomen occurs in the upper or lower abdomen and sometimes in the stomach. It is estimated that almost everybody in the world experiences abdominal pain at some point in their lives. The pain may be caused by simple occurrences such as indigestion in some cases. However, it could also a signal or symptom for a more serious underlying medical condition such as an STI or cancer. Either way, it is good to have the pains checked out as soon as possible.

Many different factors can cause the abdomen to pain. Among the most common causes are ulcers, cancers, appendicitis, gallbladder disease, food poisoning, diverticulitis, and vascular problems. STDs, cysts, fibroids and other female diseases are also major causes. In other cases, the pain may be experienced when one is pregnant. Such pains will disappear when one gives birth. They occur frequently on a very irregular basis. One may also experience discomfort in their abdomen after physical trauma.

The characteristics of the pains vary from one individual to the next depending on factors such as cause. In most cases, the pain will be dull, piercing, twisting, knifelike, cramp-like, stabbing, or sharp. It also varies in the level of severity and how frequently it occurs.

The amount of time the pains take differ. They may stay shortly and disappear or they may take several hours or days. When the occur they may persist constantly, lessen, or worsen with time. Maintaining a record of the occurrences and characteristics of the discomfort is advised. This record can help the doctor in making a diagnosis. Treatment also may also depend on the record.

The occurrence of the aching may be triggered by some cause or may occur on its own. Also, some events may make it worse or relieve it. Examples of events that may relieve or worsen the problem include bowel movement, running, eating, lying down, vomiting, and standing. Some of the common positions where aching occurs commonly are lower left/right side, upper left/right side, lower, upper, or middle side. The cause can be effectively indicated by the location of the discomfort.

In some cases the aching of the abdomen may be caused by a different problem that is not related to that part of the body. For instance, some pneumonias and heart attacks may cause the problem. Some kinds of rashes like shingles often cause the abdomen to ache. Even more notable, a bite from the black widow spider is known to cause this problem.

Diagnosis is usually done through a combination of physical examination, testing, and history of the disease. Testing is done through diagnostic methods such as blood tests and x-rays. The patient has to answer a series of questions from the doctor first before a physical examination follows.

The treatment one receives is determined by what causes the pain. Many treatment options are available and they include observation, endoscopy, medication, and surgery. The earlier treatment begins, the better the chances of total cure.
