Thinking Of Using Soy For Hot Flashes

By Laura McFadden

Many females, when going through stages of menopause, will visit their family doctor and seek help to alleviate some of the symptoms. In many instances, the doctor will prescribe a course of drugs designed to reduce night sweats and other symptoms. A large number of women are now looking into more natural solutions and if you are thinking of using soy for hot flashes there are a few important things to be considered beforehand.

Doctors will have approved medication that they can prescribe that will combat some of the menopausal symptoms. The most popular of these is HRT and many females have used it and continue to do so with good results. In some instances, using this particular type of drug has resulted in some side effects so a lot of females are now opting for natural remedies and treatments.

In recent years, many females have started using soy products in their diet to help with hot flashes and night sweats. Soy is very high in estrogens and this stops the body producing the chemicals that cause the sweating. It is not officially approved by doctors and the professional medics but many doctors have advised women to use it while the in depth research continues.

Some of the medical reports investigating the use of soy based products have produced mixed opinions and findings and things are not clear. A number of patients have reported some digestive problems and other health problems after regularly using it. There is still a lot of research and testing to be done, and until then, the official facts and findings are unavailable.

Other medical reports that have been published say that taking soy on a regular basis can increase the risks of cancer. Women who have previously suffered from breast cancer have been advised not to take soy due to the estrogens that it contains. Other studies have claimed that it prevents cancer so these results are conflicting at the moment. If you have ever been diagnosed with cancer it is advisable to consult a doctor before you include these products in your diet.

There are many ways to use soy in your diet and it can be found in most stores. Milk is very popular and it is also used to make burgers, sports bars and cereals. A lot of vegetarian ready meals and meat substitutes that are on the market will contain tofu and this is regularly used in things such as sausages.

When using alternative medicines, some care is needed and some you need to take a few things into account. If you start to feel worse or any other symptoms develop you should stop using it and try an alternative. If the soy seems to be working and you feel that it is beneficial you can continue to use it as long as good health is maintained.

Prior to using any treatment you should ask the advice of your family physician. A healthy diet and taking regular exercise is also recommended to help you to respond to your treatments better. There is a lot of information to be found online regarding soy, and it is a good idea to read as much of this as you can.
