Why Instructional Rounds In Education Improves A Teachers Performance During Classes

By Charles Olson

Pedagogy the discipline that studies the practice and theory of education. This branch of education focuses on teaching vocation or general education. Pedagogy is referred to the Greek word paidagogia which is a synthesis between ago and pais, ago refers to lead while pais refers to child.

However pedagogue was originally used to refer to a slave that escorted children to school in Greece. But today pedagogue embraces various meanings that refer to an individual who works as a representative of society. This relates to the idea that instructional rounds in education need experienced tutors and newbie teachers to work together much like a master and disciple relationship.

Education is not only found in the halls of elementary and high school institutions. It is also found in many colleges and universities where students pursue their interest in various fields to gain trade skills. Most students who excel in their studies often want to improve their careers by simply pursuing more education and related working experience, but at some point these same students will want to become tutors themselves.

The round is typically composed of both experienced and new tutors but consists of only of five people and not less than three. In this group each person is visited during class hours, the session lasts for about fifteen minutes, and throughout that time the group simply observes the class and teacher. The presiding teacher should not be afraid of being marked against because the purpose is simply to take notes.

Therefore teachers may need to exert more effort for these students who are lagging behind. And a group of 3 to 5 teachers observing this would be able to provide that same teacher with insights and other advice. Since it is every professors aim to see their children improve and graduate even with passing grades.

But doing this is very difficult, so for a holistic approach other teachers can provide input to help the child. However this is limited by the fact that the objects of the subject might be under the influence of the residing teacher. And it might not provide a good observation ground for those who are seeking insight and other information.

Because this brings a lot of opportunities for teachers to improve themselves. That conducting this type of evaluation method has provided most teachers with a chance to review their past performance and develop themselves over time. But disadvantages also exists regarding the evaluation.

And this might proves to be less helpful because other teachers will immediately pick up that something is wrong. Rounds should feel naturally and uninhibited, but because the teacher and class are both being observed. It is really hard for students to really let loose and be themselves without being judge by the observing group.

Furthermore teachers will not be able to improve if too much control is being exerted around the students. And to reiterate the point of getting a round in a class is to help teachers become better providers of education. It will not help if they are only good at showing it, but they should exert effort and confidence in their teaching ability and skills. Hence observers only take note of the areas where improvement is needed.
